Crafting a Magnetic Go Fishing Game
When my niece visited during the school holidays, I was searching for entertaining ideas. Inspired by a beautiful "Magnetic Let’s Go Fishing" game on Etsy, I decided to create my version due to time constraints. I recalled a DIY fishing game my grandmother made for me, and it was the perfect solution.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Craft Foam Sheets (A4 recommended for more fish)
- Wooden Rod (customise the length and size)
- 18x5mm Round Ferrite Magnets
- Piece of yarn (length of your choice)
- Sandpaper or nail filer (for texturing the rod's end)
- Free Foam Fish Template
Optional: Sharpie/Markers, Felt, Googly eyes, Washers.
TOOLS:
- Glue Gun
- Scissors or craft knife
ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS:
- Felt:
- Glue or sew felt fish, adding magnets afterwards.
- No need to invert the fish since the felt doesn’t fray.
- Card Stock:
- Use patterned or glittered card stock for colourful fish.
*Note: Glittered card stock may be shed over time.
- Fishing Pole:
- Substitute a wooden pole with an empty paper towel roll.
CRAFTING MAGNETIC FOAM FISH
- Print and cut out fish patterns.
- Trace patterns onto the foam and cut them out.
- Glue washers inside the foam fish.
- Apply glue to the fish, press down on the foam, and repeat on the back.
- Decorate your fish with eyes and scales. You can even let the kids decorate them.
- Optional: Add googly eyes.
CRAFTING THE MAGNETIC FISHING ROD
I purchased a rod from Builder Warehouse. You or the kids can decorate the fishing rod if you would like. I left it natural for a simple look. Follow these steps:
- Sand down rod edges until smooth.
- Glue twine/yarn to the rod's end.
- Attach the magnet to the twine/yarn end.
That's it! Crafting your Magnetic Fishing Game is a breeze. Create as many fish as you like in a variety of colours for endless fun. If you create more rods and fish, more kids can play and compete to see who can catch fish.
