Spending a weekend with my niece, is always delightful, filled with laughter, stories, and crafts. Last weekend, we tried something new: magnet painting! This simple yet fun art activity combines the magic of magnets with the joy of painting, making it perfect for young kids. We used a few basic items, and the results were colourful masterpieces that Emily proudly displayed on the fridge.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you enjoy this fun craft with your little ones.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Magnetic Wand:
  • Glue the ferrite disc magnet to one end of the ice cream stick using super glue. Let it dry completely. This will be your magnetic wand to guide the metallic objects through the paint.
  1. Set Up the Workspace:
  • Cover the table with old newspapers or a plastic tablecloth to prevent any paint mess.
  • Set up the paper plates on the table; these will serve as the painting surfaces.
  • Pour different colours of paint onto paper plate.
  1. Select Your Magnetic Objects:
  • Choose from screws, nuts, washers, and paper clips. These will be the "paint brushes" that create patterns on the paper plates.
  1. Create Your Paintings:
  • Dip the magnetic objects into the paint. You can dip them directly or pour a small amount of paint onto the plate and roll the objects through it.
  • Place the paint-covered objects onto the paper plate.
  • Hold the magnetic wand underneath the plate and gently move it around. The magnet will attract the metallic objects, causing them to move across the surface, spreading paint and creating colourful trails and patterns.
  1. Experiment with Patterns:
  • Try using different types of objects and see how they create various textures and lines.
  • Experiment with combining colours, layering different paints, and using multiple objects simultaneously.

  1. Let the Paintings Dry:
  • Once you have created your masterpiece, carefully lift the paper plate and set it aside to dry. The drying time will depend on the thickness of the paint.

Optional Step:

Materials Needed for This Step:

  • Black pen or marker (fine tip works best for details)
  1. Wait for the Paint to Dry Completely:
  2. Ensure that the paint on your paper plate is fully dry before proceeding. This will prevent smudging and allow the marker to glide smoothly over the surface.
  3. Outline and Add Details:
  4. Using the black pen or marker, carefully draw over the dried paint to outline shapes or add new elements. Here are some ideas:
  5. Pumpkin: Draw a large round shape and add details like a stem and face.
  6. Tree: Create a trunk and branches over a background of green and brown paint.
  7. Smiley Face: Add a cheerful face to a colourful circle.
  8. Abstract Shapes: Enhance any random patterns with doodles, swirls, or geometric shapes.
  9. Personalize Your Art:
  10. Encourage kids to add their own unique touches, whether it's drawing their favourite animals, writing their name, or creating imaginative scenes.

  1. Clean Up:
  • Wash the magnetic objects, magnetic wand, and any other tools you used. Store the materials for future creative sessions.
  1. Display or Gift Your Masterpiece:
  • Once your painting is complete with added details, display it proudly or gift it to family and friends!

 Tips and Variations:

  • Use different shapes and sizes of magnetic objects to create a variety of patterns.
  • Try different colour combinations and see how they mix on the plate.
  • Experiment with speed and direction of the magnetic wand to see how it changes the movement of the objects.
  • Make a themed painting by using colours associated with seasons, holidays, or favourite characters.

Magnet painting is a fantastic activity that combines art and science, perfect for a creative and educational weekend with kids. It's a fun way to explore the properties of magnets while making beautiful, colourful art. So, grab your magnetic wand and paints, and get ready for a day of magnetic magic!
